TRANSLATION IN MOTION
Workshop and ResidencyDuration 10 days
The idea of this workshop is rooted in the notion that culture exists in the body, and that dancing involves complex physical, verbal, and cognitive translation, requiring kinesthetic and linguistic clarity. The artists hope that by sharing and building upon their practice, they might deepen their understanding of the ways dance can enrich communication across people and cultures. Some thoughts and questions that currently guide their inquiry include the following:• If we accept that motion is at the heart of all living activity, and if we also accept that language, in a sense, gives form to our experiences, then we could see a direct connection between the two. In some way, are we not, at each moment, engaging in a process of translating thoughts and motion, motion and thoughts?• How do we see, record and/or register movement? What words do we draw on to illustrate motion? What physical cues do we rely on to express the feeling of dancing in writing or in conversation? In what ways do we sense the possibility of moving in our own body when responding to verbal prompts from others?
The workshop and the residency were implemented in the premises of the Cultural Center of the City of Visaginas (Lithuania) with the final presentation as a site-specific performance open for the public in the frames of the Festival of performing arts "Visaginas Spaces".
