DANCE

"...Manifesting through the author's physicality and disappearing without a trace in space, dance leaves behind ambiguity and emptiness. Each of us, as we gaze, fills it with meaning. Wisdom accumulated over time seeps into us through the energy of movement and the density of space. Staring into the dance, you can see a person in their transcendental honesty. If this doesn't happen, maybe today's dance didn't happen. Or maybe, we just weren't paying attention. That happens too. They also say that often in someone else's dance, we see a reflection of ourselves."

Russian classical ballet is today one of the main products of Russian cultural export and one of the symbols of Russian art and culture outside of Russia. The performance "Beauty of the Beast" suggests looking at classical Russian ballet as an aestheticized form of violence against a person and over the body.

TRANSLATION IN MOTION

Creative residency and workshopDuration 10 days

ongoing research and residency

Location: Visaginas, Lithuania, Visaginas Culture CenterDates: July, 25th - August 3rd, 2023

Ukrainian choreographer Anton Ovchinnikov and US choreographer Peter Kyle shared with 11 participants of the workshop what they learned in their previous project (“Shirts and Shoes”), and proposed a new form of study and studio practice that elaborates on their prior research. Their goal was to delve more deeply into the guiding thoughts and questions by interrogating what may be useful in the (different? similar?) ways the participating actors and dancers approach the multi-faceted relationship between verbal and kinesthetic modes of communication.

FRIEND OR FOE

Solo performanceDuration: 60 minutes

Premiered in PostPlayTheater, Kyiv, UkraineDates: June 10-16th, 2020
Performance created with the support of House of Europe

"Friend or Foe" is a system of aircraft radar recognition used in air defense forces. This system allows missiles to distinguish enemy aircraft from friendly ones. It is crucial to accurately determine the ownership of the aircraft to prevent tragedies. The system utilizes radar sensors that respond to signals sent from the ground station and relay them back. If the system makes a mistake, a tragedy can occur.
How does a similar process occur in humans?

DUEL.SOLO

Available for touring in 2024

Solo performanceDuration: 40 minutes

Premiered in PostPlayTheater, Kyiv, Ukraine

An adult confident man on a wooden chair in an isolated space with portraits of dictators on the walls. Alone with his thoughts and ideas about what he should be and what to strive for. First of all, about how to become a slightly better version of yourself every day and every hour. How to smooth corners, grind burrs, polish dents. And always look up to the strongest.

Opposite the man in the auditorium is another equally empty wooden chair. Who is it for? Perhaps this is just a mirror in which you can try to see yourself.

Perfect human?
Or the real one?

#CRIMEAisMINE / #КРЫММОЙ

Mocumentary performanceDuration: 60 minutes

Premiered in PostPlayTheater, Kyiv, UkraineDate: August 19, 2017

When we created this performance in 2017 together with the stage director Halyna Dzhykaeva from Crimea and dramaturg Den Humenny from PostPlayTheater in Kyiv Vladimir Putin just announced that he was going to build Crimean Bridge. We didn`t believe that. We spoke Russian and never thought that the language can ever become our enemy one day.
Ukrainian musicians and choreographers were doing business in Russia (ok, not all of them). The "Crimean question" gradually disappeared from the main Ukrainian media. We decided to tour Crimea by bicycle and tell a story about that.

DE/SYNCHRONIZATION

available for touring in 2024

Solo performanceDuration: 45 minutes

Premiered in Lviv, UkraineDate: September, 2015

Exploring the past of his country through the lens of individual mental and physical experience, the author of the performance delved into photographs and texts, listened to the sounds and melodies of his youth. They moved along with the music that left a trace in memory and in the body. Which experience is more important? Is it possible to understand the nuances of one's own memory by turning to the physical?
The answers to these questions formed a mosaic, where one memory overlaid another, creating a mysterious accumulation of meanings. This mosaic of movements, thoughts, memories, and emotions became the foundation of the performance. When it was ready for release, the author realized that making any public conclusions didn't make sense. Therefore, the only valid conclusion is the author themselves.
In this performance, dance exists as an utterly utilitarian tool, a part of memory that allows resolving the unconscious contradictions between the physical and the mental. In a way, it's an instrument. And as it is known, an instrument rarely makes sense by itself.
